Welcome to your ✨Monday Moment✨

Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.
Pick a colour 🔴 🟠 🟡 🟢 🔵 🟣
Find the moment below with that same colour, then go to the closing moment at the end.
🔴 Take a moment to think of someone who helped you become more independent. What did they say or do that helped you find your feet?
🟠 Take a moment to learn the origin of the word independence. It comes from the medieval French word dependre, meaning “to hang from”, with the Latin prefix in-, meaning “not”, added to it. Originally, independence meant “not to hang from” or “not to depend on”.
🟡 Take a moment to stand on your own two feet, a reminder of your strength and independence. First, sit or stand tall, relax your shoulders and let your tongue rest gently away from the roof of your mouth. Think of something you’ve accomplished on your own that once felt impossible. If you’re standing, place your feet about hip-width apart. If you’re sitting, simply notice your feet resting firmly on the floor. As you inhale, imagine your breath travelling down through your body and into your feet, rooting you to the earth. As you exhale, gently lift your chin and lengthen your spine. Continue for a few slow breaths, reminding yourself that you’ve faced difficult moments before and found your feet every single time.
🟢 Take a moment to think back to one of the first times you remember being independent. Perhaps it was riding your bike without stabilisers, walking to school on your own or catching a bus alone. How is being independent now different from when you were younger?
🔵 Take a moment to learn about some animals that become independent soon after birth:
- Giraffes🦒 – calves can stand within about 30 minutes of being born and usually walk within a few hours, so they can keep up with the herd and escape predators.
- Sea Turtles 🐢 – hatchlings receive no parental care at all. They emerge from the nest and make the dangerous journey to the sea entirely on their own.
- Ducks 🦆 – ducklings leave the nest within a day of hatching and quickly begin feeding themselves, although they still follow and learn from their mother
🟣 Take a moment to think of one decision you’ve made for yourself this week, no matter how small. Perhaps you chose to try something new, speak up, say no, ask for help or simply take a different path. Every independent decision is a reminder that your choices shape your journey.
A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. We often strive for independence, but independence doesn’t mean not needing anyone. Every one of us has been shaped by the people who taught us, encouraged us and stood beside us until we found our own feet. This week, celebrate how far you’ve come independently, but don’t be afraid to lean on others when you need to. Standing on your own two feet doesn’t mean you have to stand alone.

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome; this is a safe space. If this helped you today, consider passing it along to a friend who might need it too.
