Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to learn that there are said to be over 360 dog breeds in the world. Some of the most unique include the Mexican Xoloitzcuintli, the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, the West African Azawakh and the Norwegian Lundehund. How many others can you think of?

🟠 Take a moment to try Dog Breath (Svana Pranayama). Sit tall and relax your shoulders. Take a deep breath in and exhale fully. On your next inhale, pause briefly at the top of the breath. Then exhale in a series of short, quick breaths through the mouth, like a dog panting. Some yoga practitioners use this breathing technique to help release tension and boost energy. Even just one round can have a positive effect. Please note: if you feel light-headed at all, return to normal breathing.

🟡 Take a moment to learn that The Beatles hid a little surprise for dogs in one of their songs. Paul McCartney has said that near the end of A Day in the Life, he added a high-frequency sound that humans generally can’t hear, but his sheepdog could.

🟢 Take a moment to learn that petting a dog has been shown to help reduce stress. Studies have found that interacting with dogs can lower heart rate and cortisol (the body’s main stress hormone) while increasing oxytocin, aka the “love hormone.” Just make sure to ask permission before petting a dog that isn’t yours.

🔵 Take a moment to think of a dog you remember from your childhood. It might have been your own pet, a friend’s dog or even one you just saw regularly. What was their name? What kind of dog were they? What’s the first memory that comes to mind when you think of them?

🟣 Take a moment to think of a film or TV show that involved a dog as a main part of the storyline.

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Dogs leave a lasting impression on the people who know them. As the saying goes, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” Their loyalty, joy, and ability to live fully in the present are qualities that many of us love. Whether you’re a dog person or not, perhaps there’s something we can all learn from them this week: to greet others warmly, to appreciate the people around us, and to find a little more joy in the everyday moments that are easy to overlook. And while we may not have a tail to wag, we can still choose to share our happiness with those around us. 🐾
