Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to think of a few favourite disco songs (Feel free to pop them in the comments). Who or what do they make you think of?

🟠 Take a moment to learn that one of the earliest disco songs is thought to be Soul Makossa by Manu Dibango, released in 1972. Although it lacked the classic disco “four-on-the-floor” beat, it was a pioneering track that helped shape the genre.

🟡 Take a moment to take some disco-beat-breaths. Oh yes, this is happening. Stand up (or stay seated if you prefer), relax your shoulders, and drop your tongue from the roof of your mouth. Imagine a disco ball sparkling above you, shining, moving and reflecting all around you. Put your hands on your hips. Inhale as you tap your right foot four times, exhale and tap your left foot four times. Repeat, and maybe let your hips join in with the four-beat breath. If you want to make the breath even better, put on a favourite disco tune at the same time and dance away any stress.

🟢 Take a moment to learn that I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor was both the first and last winner of the Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording in 1980.

🔵 Take a moment to savour this beautiful quote of unknown origin: “A disco ball is made of hundreds of pieces of broken glass, yet it still shines beautifully. You are not broken. You are a disco ball.”

🟣 Take a moment to picture the world’s largest disco ball. Created for the Desert Island Disco at Bestival in the UK in 2014, this dazzling inflatable sphere measured an incredible 10.33 metres in diameter (as tall as a three-storey building) and shimmered with thousands of mirrored tiles reflecting light in every direction.

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Disco found its roots in the underground nightclubs of New York City in the 1970s, particularly within Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ communities. It created safe spaces for freedom, self-expression, connection and joy. It paved the way for an entirely new sound in music. As you move into this week, put a little disco in your step. Free your mind, move your feet, and celebrate each other for every little reflective mirror that we are in the world.
