Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to think of someone you know who is a great storyteller. What makes them so engaging? Are they animated, full of detail, or just naturally captivating?

🟠 Take a moment to learn how much stories travel. Almost every culture around the world has its own version of Cinderella, each one told slightly differently, yet familiar. The earliest written version comes from 9th-century China, known as Ye Xian, showing how storytelling can connect people across time and place.

🟡 Take a moment to recall a song that tells a story.

🟢 Take a moment to think about one story from your life so far that you would most easily share with someone getting to know you. How would it feel to tell it?

🔵 Take a moment to take a little storytelling breath. Yes, that’s right, gather round, it’s story time. Sit tall, relax your shoulders, and gently drop your tongue from the roof of your mouth. Take a deep breath in, pause and exhale all the way out. Sit tall, relax your shoulders, and gently drop your tongue from the roof of your mouth. Inhale in, pause, and exhale all the way out. Now imagine a beautiful book resting on your lap. Notice its cover, its colours, its texture. Feel its weight in your hands. Gently open it. Inhale, turn the first page. Exhale and read: “Once upon a time, there was a lovely human named [your name].” Inhale, turn the page. Exhale and read: “[Your name] was really good at [something you are good at], and they shared that gift with others. People would say, ‘[Your name] is so talented, I’m so glad I met them.’” Inhale, turn the page. Exhale and read: “Whenever [your name] had a rough day, they remembered the gifts they brought to the world, and it helped them feel a little better.” Inhale, turn the page. Exhale and read: “So if you’re having a rough day, be like [your name]. Remember what you bring to the world, because it is very much appreciated. The end.”

🟣 Take a moment to think about when you were younger, what were some of your favourite stories? Did someone tell them to you or did you read them in a book?

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Storytelling is such a powerful part of being human. It can lift us up, educate us, and shape how we see ourselves and the world, sometimes in ways we don’t even notice. This week, take a little time to tune in to the stories you’re telling yourself, and the ones you’re taking in from around you. Notice which ones feel true, which ones feel kind, and which ones might need rewriting. And take the time to listen to others’ stories too, you never know what you might learn about them.
