Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to think of a time when people often lose their patience. What advice would you give someone to help handle those moments differently next time?

🟠 Take a moment to learn about the frogfish, one of the animal kingdom’s most patient creatures. Known for its ability to mimic its surroundings, it can patiently wait, camouflaged and motionless, for its prey to come by before consuming it whole. Can you think of any other animals that are exceptionally patient?

🟡 Take a moment to ponder the quote by Ralph W. Emerson, “Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.” What elements of nature does it bring to mind? Do you agree with Emerson?

🟢 Take a moment to take a breath for some patience. You may have already heard of a box breath as it is a popular technique for not only patience but also calming the nervous system in general. Sit up tall, relax your shoulders and imagine a square (if you would prefer you can also physically draw a square on a piece of paper or trace a square with your finger on the table). Breathe in for four seconds as you go up one side of the square, hold the breath for four seconds as you go across the top of the square, breathe out for four seconds as you go down the other side, and hold the breath for four seconds as you go along the bottom of the square. Repeat this four times, and use it whenever you feel frustrated and need some patience and calm.

🔵 Take a moment to think about some relaxing activities that require patience. What are your favourites? What is one you have always wanted to try?

🟣 Take a moment to think about someone in your life who is very patient. How do they behave when others are being impatient? What could you learn from them?

Take another deep breath. Hold it. Exhale. Smile. In such a fast-paced world, it is understandable that we are sometimes a little less practised in patience. If you find yourself feeling impatient this week, take a breath and reset before reacting. Be kind to yourself and those around you, as we all have those moments from time to time.

I love these Monday Moments … I learn so much about nature (had never heard of a frog fish and the suggestion to box breathe) and marvel again at the parallels with humans and animals and nature.

I smiled at the image of the dog waiting unquestionably patiently for his ‘master’ to return … as far as an example of nature’s patience … it seems it might be more of an acceptance that ‘growth’ takes time . ie for plants to grow, bud and flower or fruit trees to flower then ripen.

As far as observing how a patient person handles another being impatient, I think I would have to say, that they don’t re-act/retaliate to the impatient person’s explosive tirade.

My favourite activity requiring patience is crafting of any kind, trying new methods/ideas until it clicks with satisfaction.

The thoughtful suggestions in these Monday Moments give me a chance to stop the hurrying demands of the world and enjoy some reflections … thank-you.
