✨September 7th✨ – Farming

Welcome to your ✨Monday Moment✨

Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.
Pick a colour 🔴 🟠 🟡 🟢 🔵 🟣
Find the moment below with that same colour, then go to the closing moment at the end.

🔴 Take a moment to think of a film or tv show set on a farm. What country is it set in? What type of farm is it? What is the head farmer like?

🟠 Take a moment to imagine this: 23,000 years ago, long before tractors, barns, or even villages, people may already have been experimenting with farming. At the Ohalo II archaeological site on the southwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, archaeologists discovered evidence of cultivated edible grasses, offering a peek into the origins of agriculture.

🟡 Take a moment to reflect on this quote by American humorist Will Rogers: “The farmer has to be an optimist or he wouldn’t still be a farmer.” What might change if you approached your week with a farmer’s optimism?

🟢 Take a moment to learn about some amazing farms out there. Anna Creek Station in South Australia spans a staggering six million acres and is the largest working cattle station in the world. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, you can find the beautiful spiderweb rice fields of Cancar. Created centuries ago when land was divided among families from a central point, the fields form an intricate web-like pattern. The centre of the web was traditionally used for ceremonies and harvest celebrations. And finally, did you know there is a tiny farm on the International Space Station called Veggie? This plant-growth facility allows astronauts to grow fresh vegetables while living in space.

🔵 Take a moment to take a breath on the farm. Sit tall and relax your shoulders. Let your tongue drop from the roof of your mouth. In your mind, imagine a field of rich, fertile soil stretching out before you. Your feet stand firmly on the earth, your eyes rest on the horizon, and your hands are held out in front of you. Imagine what seeds are planted in the fields before you, tucked beneath the soil. As you inhale, scoop your hands out to your sides, down, and then up towards your heart bringing the nurturing energy of the earth with them. As you exhale, sweep your hands forward and out to the sides. Picture the crops bursting through the earth, reaching towards the sun and growing strong. Repeat for a few breaths, planting possibilities on each inhale and watching them flourish on each exhale. Repeat as needed and anytime you need a boost.

🟣 Take a moment to think about whether you know any farmers. What do they have on their farm? Maybe you even know a backyard-farmer, someone growing vegetables in a small allotment or keeping a few chickens? Have you ever thought about being a farmer? What would you farm?

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Farming is all about patience, care, diligence and cultivating what is needed to sustain people. As the saying goes, “If you ate today, thank a farmer.” This week, take a moment to appreciate the farmers who help put food on our tables and perhaps even try to support a local farm too. After you have done that, reflect on the things you’re ‘farming’ in your own life: your relationships, goals, skills, and wellbeing. Remember, growth often begins long before we can see the results. 🚜🌾🧑‍🌾

This week’s Monday Moment is dedicated to a dear friend who becomes a quinquagenarian today and is the best local farmer I know 🧑‍🌾

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome; this is a safe space. If this helped you today, consider passing it along to a friend who might need it too.
