Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to think of a country song. You don’t have to be a fan of country music – just think of the first one that comes to mind. Do you remember the first time you heard it?

🟠 Take a moment to learn that country music’s roots actually stretch right back to the 17th century, blending influences from European folk songs, African-American work songs and church hymns in rural communities. The genre found a wider audience in the 1920s, when pioneers such as Louis Vasnier, Eck Robinson, Fiddlin’ John Carson and Vernon Dalhart were among the first artists to record country music.

🟡 Take a moment to learn about the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. Covering more than 350,000 square feet, the building is shaped like a giant bass clef, with windows that resemble piano keys. Inside are some of country music’s most famous costumes, instruments and treasured memorabilia. Since its founding in 1961, the Hall of Fame has inducted 161 country music legends, including the first inductees Hank Williams, Fred Rose and Jimmie Rodgers.

🟢 Take a moment to think of some country artists whose songs have reached people far beyond the world of country music. Legends such as Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and, of course, the ‘Queen of Country’, Dolly Parton, have won the hearts of millions with their storytelling, talent and authenticity.

🔵 Take a moment to take a breath inspired by one of Dolly Parton’s most famous songs, Love Is Like a Butterfly. Dolly often spoke of her love for butterflies as symbols of freedom, joy and spreading happiness wherever they go. So first, sit tall and relax your shoulders. Now imagine a beautiful butterfly. As you breathe in, imagine filling yourself with the butterfly’s freedom, lightness and joy. Feel those feelings travelling through your body, all the way to your fingertips and toes. Pause for a moment at the top of the breath. Now slowly exhale and imagine the butterfly taking flight once more, floating effortlessly on the breeze and scattering tiny moments of happiness wherever it goes to the people out there who need it most. Repeat whenever you need a little lift.

🟣 Take a moment to imagine yourself as a country singer and song writer. What would you call your first song and what would it be about?

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Country music is often loved for its honest storytelling and its celebration of everyday life. Filled with love, loss, hope, heartbreak, family, friendship, dreams and second chances, the kind of stories we all live. This week, notice the stories you tell yourself and the stories you share with others. Do they lift you up or hold you back? You are both the storyteller and the main character in your own story, and each day offers the chance to write a new verse. And perhaps, as we continue to remember Dolly Parton this week, we can all try to be a little more like her: kind, authentic, resilient and never afraid to shine.
