Welcome to your ✨Monday Moment✨

Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.
Pick a colour 🔴 🟠 🟡 🟢 🔵 🟣
Find the moment below with that same colour, then go to the closing moment at the end.
🔴 Take a moment to learn that today, August 17th, is National Thrift Shop Day in the US. In the UK, we tend to call them charity shops, but whatever you call them, they can be wonderful places to hunt for a bargain, discover something unexpected and give a pre-loved treasure a new home. If you pass one today, why not pop in and have a little look? You never know what might catch your eye.
🟠 Take a moment to discover that the word thrift comes from the Middle English word “thriven”, meaning to thrive. It was originally associated with growth, vitality and prosperity, while the meaning of being careful with money came much later. So perhaps thrift isn’t about having less, but making the most of what we have so we can thrive.
🟡 Take a moment to look around you. Can you spot the last thing you thrifted? Perhaps it’s a piece of clothing, a book, a piece of furniture or something completely unexpected. Take a moment to remember finding it. What made you choose it, and what do you still like about it now?
🟢 Take a moment to picture a little coastal flower known as thrift. Imagine slender green stems topped with small, rounded clusters of tiny pink flowers, growing in clumps along rocky shores and grassy coastal places. Despite their delicate appearance, thrift is surprisingly hardy, thriving in windswept places where other plants might struggle.
🔵 Take a moment to think back to something you had when you were younger that wasn’t brand new. Perhaps a hand-me-down jumper, a second-hand toy, a book from a charity shop or something passed down through your family. Can you remember what it looked or felt like? Maybe you can still picture it now. What memories does it bring back?
🟣 Take a moment to be thrifty with your energy. Imagine your energy as coins in a purse. As you inhale, take a look inside the purse. How many coins are there? As you exhale, think about how many you’ve already spent today. Inhale again and consider what you’d like to spend some of your remaining coins on. Then exhale, and remember: your energy is worth being thrifty with.
A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. As you go about your week, perhaps think about where a little thrift could help you – with your money, the things you use, or even the energy you choose to give. Being thrifty isn’t about going without; it’s about avoiding waste and being thoughtful about what we have and how we use it. So thrift on, good people!

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome; this is a safe space. If this helped you today, consider passing it along to a friend who might need it too.

Do you work for a business that would like to bring more wellbeing into your team culture? Or are you part of a publication that could benefit from a wellbeing column? If so, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to get in touch to explore how we could work together.
