Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to think of at least one person you know called Dawn. How would you describe their personality? What is the first memory of them that comes to mind?

🟠 Take a moment to learn where the word dawn comes from. It comes from the Old English word “dagian”, meaning “to become day”. So dawn isn’t simply the start of a new day; its very name describes the gradual moment when darkness begins to become light.

🟡 Take a moment to think about the sounds of dawn. The phrase “dawn chorus” describes the beautiful burst of birdsong that greets the early morning, while an aubade is a poem or song inspired by daybreak. If you could choose a soundtrack for sunrise, what would you hear?

🟢 Take a moment to breathe in your own dawn. Sit tall, relax your shoulders and let your tongue drop from the roof of your mouth. Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath in, imagining the first light of a new day rising within you. Hold it for a moment, then gently exhale, letting go of yesterday and anything you no longer need to carry. Inhale again and breathe in the new light, the possibilities and the day ahead. Exhale and allow yourself to begin again.

🔵 Take a moment to learn about Dawn Fraser, an Australian swimmer who became the first person to win the same individual swimming event at three consecutive Olympic Games. She won gold in the 100m freestyle in 1956, 1960 and 1964, and held the world record for the event for an incredible 15 years. Known for her determination both in and out of the pool, she became one of Australia’s most celebrated – and occasionally controversial – sporting figures.

🟣 Take a moment to think back to the last time you were up to watch the dawn. Where were you? Were you with anyone? What could you see, hear or feel? What do you remember most about that moment?

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. There is always something quietly powerful about dawn. Each day, dawn gives us a chance to start again. We can’t change what happened yesterday, but we can choose what we carry with us into today. Sometimes, that’s all we need to do: take a breath, look to the light and keep going. Because however dark the night, the dawn still comes 🌅

This week’s Monday Moment is dedicated to my sister, Dawn-Marie, whose birthday it is today. May she always remember just how much light she brings with her.

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome; this is a safe space. If this helped you today, consider passing it along to a friend who might need it too.
