Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

Pick a colour 🔴 🟠 🟡 🟢 🔵 🟣

Find the moment below with that same colour, then go to the closing moment at the end.

🔴 Take a moment to think if you were to make a quilt. What fabrics would you choose? Soft cotton, smooth silk, cosy flannel? Imagine how each one feels beneath your hand – the smoothness, the texture, the warmth – as you run your fingers across it.

🟠 Take a moment to think if you have anything quilted in your house. A blanket? A bedspread? A coat? Do you remember where you got it?

🟡 Take a moment to take a quilting breath. Sit tall. Relax your shoulders. Drop your tongue from the roof of your mouth. Check in with yourself. How are you feeling right now? Notice any tension or discomfort and where it sits in your body. Now think of three things that would help you feel more at ease today. It might be a colour, a song, a sense of confidence, or a feeling of happiness. Place your left hand in front of you, palm up. As you inhale, imagine picking up a piece of fabric that represents one of those things. Lay it gently across your left palm. Smooth it out and quietly name it – for example, “a layer of confidence.” As you exhale, breathe out any tension or discomfort you noticed earlier. With your next breath, add another layer. Smooth it into place and name it. Continue until you’ve added all the layers you need to make today feel a little lighter. With one final slow breath, use a finger to trace soft stitches across your hands, stitching the layers together. Step into your day, quilted with everything you need.

🟢 Take a moment to learn about quilting circles. They began as practical gatherings where women came together to finish large quilts that were difficult to complete alone. In early communities in places like the United States and Canada, neighbours would gather around a shared frame, stitching as they talked and supporting one another. Similar community sewing traditions also existed in England and across Europe, as well as in many African and Indigenous cultures, where textile-making was tied to storytelling and passing down knowledge. What began as shared work gradually became an important space for connection, creativity, and community care. Ever watched the film How to Make an American Quilt or more recently The Quilters?

🔵 Take a moment to think back to when you were younger. Do you remember seeing a quilt anywhere? In our own home? Maybe at a family member’s or friend’s house? Do you remember what colours it was and how it felt?

🟣 Take a moment to learn about one of the oldest surviving quilts. The Tristan Quilt, dating from around 1360–1400, was made in Sicily and depicts scenes from the legend of Tristan and Isolde. If you’re ever in London, you can see part of it at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and another section is housed at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy.

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Our lives are like quilts. Intricate layers and pieces, all sewn together, creating who we are today. Every experience, every interaction, every moment is a stitch in the pattern, and no two quilts are ever the same. As you head into your day or week, take a quiet moment to appreciate all the pieces that make you exquisitely you.
