✨February 23rd – Coach✨

Take a deep breath in. Hold it. Exhale.

🔴 Take a moment to picture a coach who meant something to you growing up, perhaps from a sport you played or watched. What do you remember most about them? Did they have a certain phrase to motivate?

🟠 Take a moment to learn the rather curious origin of the word coach. Said to originate back to the 16th-century Hungarian town of Kocs (pronoouced kosh), known for its manufacturing of high-end luxury horse-drawn carriages called Kocsi szekér (Carriages of Kocs). The definition then took a more colloquial and metamorphic turn in the 1830s, when Oxford University students began referring to a tutor as a “coach” because they essentially “carried” (supported) students through their studies and later in sports. So now you know!

🟡 Take a moment to take a coaching breath. Yes, it is time to be your own coach. Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four and think, “I notice where I am right now,” simply observing without judgment. Pause briefly at the top of the breath and remind yourself, “There is something here to learn.” Now exhale slowly for a count of six, thinking, “I can guide myself through this.” Repeat the breath cycle and gently ask yourself, “What do I need right now?” or “What is one small next step?” Let answers come naturally. Finish with one deep inhale, thinking, “I am on my own team,” and a long exhale, thinking, “ I am my own coach.”

🟢 Take a moment to learn about one of the most legendary American college football coaches in history, Amos Alonzo Stagg, often referred to as “The Grand Old Man of Football.” He coached for 71 years, first at the University of Chicago and later at the College of the Pacific. He is credited with pioneering many training innovations, including the tackling dummy and the Statue of Liberty play. He was also the first person inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

🔵 Take a moment to think about a time you faced a challenge in life. Who was there to coach or motivate you through it? What did they do that helped you keep going? Do you still use any of their strategies today when you face challenges?

🟣 Take a moment to ponder what motivational songs you would use if you were creating a coaching playlist for people to play whenever they needed a boost. Can you think of at least three? Drop them in the comments.

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it, feel it, and gently exhale. Life can feel like a steep climb at times, and it’s the coaches in our lives who steady us, remind us of our strength, and help us keep putting one foot in front of the other. As you move through your week, don’t forget to be your own coach too. Let your self-talk be positive, patient, and encouraging – and notice how much higher you’re able to climb.

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome; this is a safe space. If this helped you today, consider passing it along to a friend who might need it.
