🔴 Take a moment to explore the history of the elevator. The earliest known version is believed to have been invented by the renowned engineer and physicist Archimedes in 236 B.C. This early design is thought to have featured a platform operated by a pulley system, powered by a water wheel and animals to transport people and supplies. Over time, the mechanism evolved—animals were replaced by counterweight systems, followed by the introduction of hydraulics in the late 18th century when they became known as “ascending rooms.” Eventually, electrical systems revolutionised elevator technology, shaping the modern elevators that we use today. And for your trivia knowledge, World Elevator Day is March 23rd – so now you know!

🟠 Take a moment to ponder the three worst things to eat in an elevator – that is if you choose to be brazen enough to eat in an elevator 😏

🟡 Take a moment to think about the last time you were in an elevator. Was anyone else in there with you? How many floors did you go up or down? Was there any music playing? And here’s a fun fact—you know that ‘close door’ button? In many elevators, it’s actually said to be just a placebo button, designed to give riders a sense of control.

🟢 Take a moment to do an elevator meditation. Relax your shoulders, take a deep breath in, and exhale as you press an imaginary elevator button on the ground floor of your mind. As the doors open, step inside and select a floor between 1 and 5. As the elevator ascends, slowly inhale. When it reaches your chosen floor, exhale as the doors slide open. Who is standing there? Smile and say hello. They let you know they won’t be joining you and encourage you to continue your journey. As the doors close, select another floor between 6 and 10. Once again, inhale as the elevator rises, and exhale when the doors open. Who is waiting this time? Greet them with a smile. What do they say to you? This simple exercise offers a moment of severance from daily life—one you can return to whenever you need a mental reset.

🔵 Take a moment to consider the perfect elevator music. What would you choose? Interestingly, elevator music goes back to the 1930s when George Owen Squier utilised his 1910 patent for telephone signal multiplexing to introduce the service of background music. This soft, ambient sound, later known as Muzak, was designed not only to fill silent spaces but also to enhance worker productivity and create a calming atmosphere in public areas, including elevators.

🟣 Take a moment to ponder this popular question: If you were trapped in an elevator with any three people—real or fictional, living or deceased—who would you choose?

A closing moment to take another deep breath together. Hold it. Exhale. Elevators serve many purposes in life. They take us where we need to go when the walk is too far, or our load is too heavy, but they also offer something else — a moment. A moment to fix your hair in the mirror or marvel at the outfit you chose for the day. A moment to catch your breath and gather your thoughts, when the inner-you and outer-you have a chance to reconnect. So next time you step into an elevator, savour the ride – but make sure you hold the door for anyone else about to have their moment too! ✨
