🔴 Take a moment to think of 5 songs with the word “heart” in the title or lyrics. Sing them in your mind and carry the tunes with you for the rest of the day.
🟠 Take a moment to explore the ongoing debate surrounding the origins of the heart shape. While it is most commonly linked to the human organ, its historical roots are varied. Some suggest it evolved from the simplified form of an ivy leaf, often depicted on Greek urns alongside Dionysus, the god of wine. The earliest known use of the heart shape as a symbol of love appears in a French manuscript from around 1250, where a young man presents a heart-shaped object to a lady. Interestingly, until the 15th century, the heart shape was typically depicted upside down before taking on the orientation we recognize today. The discussion continues.
🟡 Take a moment to make a heart shape with your thumbs and index fingers. See how many different ways you can make a heart shape with your different fingers.
🟢 Take a moment to take some “heart breaths”. Gently place your hands over your heart and direct your focus to the rise and fall of your chest beneath them. Can you feel your heartbeat? Now, take a slow, deep breath in through your nose for a count of four, then hold it for seven seconds. Keep your attention on your heart and the warmth of your hands resting there. Now, exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of eight, making a soft “whoosh” sound. Repeat this cycle four times, maintaining your focus on your heart with each breath.
🔵 Take a moment to look around you. How many heart shapes can you see? Look at any leaves, patterns, doodles and pictures and find some that might hidden in plain sight.
🟣 Take a moment to ruminate on the quote from poet Mary Oliver, “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.” What comes to mind when you read this? What do you think she meant?
A closing moment to take another deep breath and pause together. Hold it. Exhale. This time of year sees an abundance of heart shapes everywhere, and they can evoke a myriad of emotions for different people. If nothing else, let them serve as a reminder of the many hearts around you daily, each with its own rhythm and uniqueness. Remember to be gentle with your own and kind to those around you.
